Children assimilate moral values amid fun

Anupam Bhagria

Ludhiana, June 15: Two religious organizations have come forward with a unique type of summer camp where children do not pay anything to the organizers rather go home stuffed with high moral values and awareness about healthy lifestyle. Sri Geeta Mandir, Vikas Nagar and Gurdwara Sri Singh Sabha, Model Town Extension, have been organizing these camps separately but with one motive - To imbibe rich Indian culture among children.

At Sri Geeta Mandir, majority of the participants are children, who are taught through stories of Panchtantra and real life examples of great personalities like Swami Vivekanand and Mahatma Gandhi et al.

Tarsem Lal, one of the organizers, said,"The camp is being organized by Life Yassianc Academy, Mumbai, - a branch of Rishi Sanskriti Vidyalya Kender in coordination with Sri Geeta Mandir. Swami Krishna Nand from Bangalore has come here to teach yoga to the kids. Along with good moral values, we also teach children to avoid junk food and cold drinks. For such awareness, we regularly hold calligraphy competitions in which they write slogans related to such subjects. Many other topics as why shall we do Pranayam and what is the use of brushing teeth after every meals are also included in it." But who will bother after this two-week long camp concludes? Tarsem Lal said,"We will hold a meeting of parents before the concluding day and tell them to continue with these activities at home too."

About 50 children are learning in the camp amid fun. Shivam Gupta, a Class VII student of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, said,"It is fun to play with other children and learn games which we can play even at home. Stories of Mahabharata narrated during the camp are very interesting." For IX standard student Niharika said,"I learnt calligraphy here and decorated my whole room with beautiful quotes from Upnishdas' and Mahabharata. Her mother Sapna Gupta said,"I also feel that my children have achieved strong sense of responsibility after joining this camp."

Similarly, Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha too holds a camp where activities like painting, cooking, dastar bandi gatka competition are organised. Mahinderjeet Singh, general secretary of the Gurdwara said,"We have roughly 300 children and 200 women in the camp which is run free of cost. The camp started on June 4 will conclude on June 30. We have been organizing this free summer camp for the past ten years and the number is increasing with each passing day."

The camp starts with gurmat class in which ways of meditations are taught and the camp is held by "GuruSikh Family Club" with the sole purpose of spreading awareness about rich cultural values and good ways of leading a healthy life.
